Reviews:
SATAN'S CANDY BASKET #3
This is true hardcore at it's finest! Excellent fucking punk hardcore. This hardcore is the way I like it, raw, intense & straight up in your face. They reminded me of the great bands like Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Exploited & The Sex Pistols. Take the best parts of the above bands and put them all together, that's what Out Cold sounds like. This is true punk rock. I loved this disc! It reminded me of when I used to skateboard and listen to these bands. All you MTV viewers who think you know what punk is, buy this, you'll be blown away!
MAD AT THE WORLD #1
Anyone who's read my old zine The Scheme knows how much I love Out Cold. It's not that they're brilliantly original in their music or incredibly witty in their lyrics, but from the start of any one of their records, they just let loose and tear it up for the whole record without stopping to catch their breath. Musically they are somewhat similar to the likes of early Gang Green and the Freeze. To tell you the truth, they could easily have fit onto the "This Is Boston Not LA" comp. This is their first full length re-mastered and re-released on their own label on CD. They've acquired a new singer since then, and the one on this CD has a more abrasive sound to his voice with more of a snarl than their newer one. While I have to admit there is nothing really groundbreaking about this, it does have the power, energy, and hatred that can blow most "hardcore" bands away nowadays, and hey, this type of hardcore was never really known for being all that innovative anyway.
METRONOME
Out Cold is about the closest thing you can get to an airplane crash and surviving. These songs are all nuclear blasts of sound that engulf you in aural radiation, then drop you like a dime. I believe one or more of the members played with GG Allin as this album is dedicated to his memory. You won't find anything as caustically assaulting in a Tower Records bin but then the term "underground" might have been designed especially for the likes of Out Cold.
UNDERGROUND PUNK SUPPORT #4 (NETHERLANDS)
The first album of Out Cold, recorded in 1993 and released in own control, is now released by them as a CD. Out Cold has always been sounding like a mid-80s hardcore band, so the style of their last CD doesn't differ much of their first recordings. However the sound differs a bit (vocals). On their first album they appear to be a great band already. There are also some other items that they apparently always had...the negative lyrics, the sober artwork and the short playing time. They expressively don't want an album to last longer than 29 minutes. So you got this 16 songs in 20 minutes time. So watch out how much you pay! Last thing I want to mention: the photos!! Whoooaaahhhh, they posed such "rough and tough" it is hilarious. Well, they were young then and it is better this way maybe, 'cause you can use a good laugh after listening to the negative lyrics.
MAXIMUMROCKNROLL #114
Hey, wait a minute, what sound is this? Could it be? Yes! It's a pissed off punk rock band. Hooray! Minor Threat and the Freeze come to mind, with a razor blade gargling vocalist. There is no Fugazi influence, for once! Hooray!!
SPECIFIC HEAT #5 (SINGAPORE)
Out Cold from the US play pure 80s hardcore punk. Very straightforward, in the vein of Minor Threat, Bad Brains, MDC, early 80s punk sound. Out Cold will be making a split with UK hardcore thrash band, Voorhees. Out Cold also has a 7" split with No Side from Japan. Fast, noisy, straightforward songs.
