BILL BONDSMEN
SWALLOWED BY THE WORLD |
| The
Bill Bondsmen finally release a full-length. It may have taken awhile, but as usual, good
things come to those who wait. 12 tracks of high-quality hardcore that avoid the generic
pitfalls similar bands often stumble into. Angry and aggressive, but tuneful. Artwork by
Chrisopher Ilth which brings to mind the works of Winston Smith & Nick Blinko. |
|

AO 38467 - 7" |
COCKROACH / GRIDE |
| Cockroach, as you should know by now, play spastic hardcore as
crazy as you could possibly want it. Gride, from the Czech Republic, play similarly
styled fast hardcore. This is a import from KAZ Records in the Slovak Republic. |
|

B9R-13 - CD |
COPS AND ROBBERS
EXECUTION STYLE |
| A band that got pretty well-known despite only having released
two EPs. This being the latter, and in my opinion, far superior of the two.
Totally classic hardcore/punk that will no doubt stand the test of time and stand
out against all it's grade-B contemporaries. On the short side, but worth it's
length in gold. |
|

EYES 001 - Cassette
* $4 (cheapo demo price) * |
ELECTRIC EYES
GOT WHAT I NEED / DOOMFREAK |
| A side
project of Mikey Flynn from Out Cold/Last In Line. Two songs of heavy, groove-oriented
rock to rattle the ol' cassette deck. |
|

FHR-023 - CD |
HEARTBURNS
FUCKED UP IN A BAD WAY |
| Cranked-up,
tuneful, garagey punk from Finland. The Heartburns are a side project of the bassist from
Hero Dishonest, and the high level of quality that Hero Dishonest bring to the hardcore
genre, the Heartburns bring to rockin' punk rock. This wouldn't be at all out of place on
the Rip Off Records roster. 10 songs that are over all too quickly and leave you humming
them for hours and wanting more. This is a straight-up solid little record. If you have
any appreciation for real punk, you'll fucking love this. |

IF-27 - LP |
HERO DISHONEST
JUGGERNAUT / LET YOUR POISON SCREAM |
| My god! Two fantastically great hardcore albums on one LP wrapped in a
gorgeous, bronze-colored gatefold jacket!!! How do you say "no-brainer" in
Finnish? |
|

IF-20 - 7" |
HERO DISHONEST / MUKEKA DI RATO |
| A split with Brazil's Mukeka Di Rato, who provide 5 tracks on their side.
Hero Dishonest come to the party with 4 songs, including their cover of Joy Division's
"Warsaw". As with everything else by HD, highly recommended. |
|

IF-17 - CD |
HERO DISHONEST
LET YOUR POISON SCREAM |
| Their 3rd
full-length and not even slightly disappointing. Angry & abrasive, but catchy as
fuck. You need this! Believe me. You'll thank me later. |
|

IF-11 - 7" |
HERO DISHONEST
CLIMBING UP ON THE WAY DOWN |
| More
explosive, vehement hardcore from these Finnish freakazoids. 6 tracks here.
Classic stuff, kids. |

LÄJÄ 28 - CD |
HERO DISHONEST
JUGGERNAUT |
| The name
says it all...one bad-ass, powerful, bombastic hardcore album! Second only to When
The Shit Hits The Man! This is the Brazilian reissue on Läjä with 20 extra tracks
culled from previous releases. |
|

MAY2 - CD |
LOS GUSANOS |
| This Ramones alumnus wasn't content to ride the coattails of his
legendary NY bandmates and started this band while the Ramones were still together.
They only released this one album. CJ's signature style is showcased here in a
rockin' punk session. Available in 2 covers for a limited time. |
|

EW 20 - 7" |
OUT COLD / FOR THE WORSE |
| A long time coming, but worth the wait. Out Cold show up with
3 new raw ragers, while fellow Massholes, For The Worse, counter with 4, plus a Cops &
Robbers cover. |
|

SCHIZ 31 - 7" |
OUT COLD / BILL BONDSMEN |
| A worthy pair up. Three tracks from Out Cold and two from the
Bondsmen. Both bands stick to their signature styles; Out Cold with the
down-and-dirty hardcore and the Bill Bondsmen with the perhaps just slightly more
progressive approach to the same. A little gem if I do say so myself. |
|

Cassette |
OUT COLD
OWN WORST ENEMY |
| A Russian cassette release of 43 tracks taken from the first 5
studio albums. 60 minutes of music! Talk about more bang for yer buck!
Comes with a big-ass lyric poster so you can scream along. |

OUT COLD
LIVE IN AMSTERDAM |
| 28 tracks recorded live in Holland during the 1998 European
tour. A good retrospective of the entire back catalog. Recorded by an audience
member...very raw & unpolished. |

OUT COLD
PERMANENT TWILIGHT WORLD |

numbers such as Falling Apart, Faster To Nowhere, and
Beginning Of The End. 14 songs. |

SHODS
THANKS FOR NUTHIN' |
| Their fourth, and some say their best, record. The Shods have
yet to produce anything less than spectacular and while some of this may be a bit more
commercial sounding, it's certainly not a blemish on their record by any means. Find
out what keeps Bostonians coming back for more. |

TIPPY |
| The long-awaited new album from the local heroes of songmanship.
Existing fans will no doubt want to get their paws on this as soon as possible. As for
those who are still pathetically unaware of how great this band is, this is as good a
place as any to right the wrong. Simply put: another classic 14 tunes (plus a Them
cover). Get this now! |

LOW-011 - 7" |
SHODS
I'M IN LOWELL, MA |
| The
Shods' first release from 1993 on Lowell Records. This features three songs, two of
which appear on future albums. Brown, was rerecorded for their debut CD.
Fighting The Abyss, a suave and slinky Clash-esque reggae-rocker that will make any
greater-Loweller grin more than once. Lastly is the rough and raw version of Shoot
You Down, which was rerecorded and polished up on Thanks For Nuthin'. I'm very
pleased to have gotten ahold of these forgotten platters. |

NEI 39 - CD |
MICAH BLUE SMALDONE
HITHER AND THITHER |
| The
highly-anticipated sophomore release from Micah Blue Smaldone finds him venturing into
darker musical territory. Where the first album was befitting whiling away a summer's
afternoon, this one is more suited to a long, dark, lonely night. Often slow and dripping
with heartfelt melancholy. Ponderous and deliberate. Song titles such as Coal Black Crepe,
More Than I Can Bear, and Grim sum it up succinctly. There's still a few upbeat pluckers,
though, to keep it from getting too overwhelmingly maudlin. For what it's worth, as much
as I love the first album, I love this one even more. |
|

NEI 33 - CD |
MICAH BLUE SMALDONE
SOME SWEET DAY |
| Former Out Cold & Shods guitarist does a musical one-eighty and
records a set of unadultered, authentic, 1920's ragtime blues. The perfect
soundtrack for a hot summer's day, sitting on a porch with a glass of lemonde, whittling a
stick. Expert finger-picking-style guitar playing, great vocal delivery,
surprisingly catchy. Anyone who appreciates quality music is sure to to find this
delightful. |

CR007 - CD |
STIVS
THE BEAT IS LOOSE |
| "The Stivs are here," to quote Bob Barker...
Indeed, the band formerly known as the Reaction has pulled themselves up by the short
hairs after a cross-country relocation and an almost total replacement of band members and
recorded this full-length in record time. It's a bit of a stretch to be referring to
them as the same band, but the fact is that fans of the Reaction album should definitely
be pleased with this latest effort. Replace some of the more Misfits-ey leanings on
the first record with ample doses of early AC/DC and a pinch of Motörhead and you have a
pretty good idea of what to expect. |
|

STENCH10 - 7" |
STUPID BABIES GO MAD / BRAINEATERS |
| The Babies from Shizuoka, The Braineaters from Yokohama.
Two bands that make for one cool split. Two new songs each. Another platter
from Human Stench. |
|

EVILFLY 02 - CD |
TECHNOCRACY
PRICE OF KILLING MACHINE |
| Imagine what it would sound like if two-thirds of the creative
core of the late, great No Side were to tackle mid-80's crossover metal. Well, no
need to imagine, because here it is. It's no news to anyone that Acme is not a fan
of this genre, but leave it to Yamaguchi & co. to make it work! If you're at all
inclined to this style of music, don't hesitate to pick this up. Even if it's not
normally your cup of tea, you may very well dig this as simply a hard music aficionado. |

straight-forward, hard-hitting hardcore. |

Dead Nation, Positive Negative, Out Cold and many more. |

WHITE FLAG
WILD KINGDOM |
OK,
please permit me to go on at length here for this is a special one... You see I pitched
the idea to White Flag head honcho Pat Fear back at the dawn of 2002 about a proper and
thorough reissue of their 1987 masterpiece "Wild Kingdom" along with
appropriate, contemporaneous bonus tracks. I've loved this album to death since I first
mailordered it back in early 1989 and felt it needed a good and proper reissue. I was
ecstatic when Pat said, "I'm down" (pun intended). Machinations got underway:
old tapes were dusted off, old artwork was unearthed, new artwork generated, money was
sent for studio time, etc. Much time went by as they struggled to find the proper
equipment to extract the recordings from their outdated source media. I waited patiently.
More time went by with no apparent progress. Long story short, 6½ years later I found
myself at a crossroads with respect to the label and made the depressing decision that I
couldn't keep it up. Well, less than 6 months after that, I get word that it was finally
done and released by longtime WF-allied label MT Records in Germany. I was simultaneously
excited and annoyed. Excited that what I had been looking forward to for so long was
finally done, but annoyed by the incredibly bad timing.
Well, enough with the backstory. The fucking thing is FINALLY here, and man does it ever
kick ass!! This thing is a beast! Not only does it contain the original 18-track
"Wild Kingdom" album, it also contains all the absolutely vital tracks from WK's
"sister" releases (WK was released in three different incarnations in different
geographic zones...their entire discography is insanely-convoluted in similar fashion) as
well as a smattering of other random, unreleased shit from that era, for a total of 34
tracks in all.
WF is one of those tragically overlooked and underrated bands. Most people probably wrote
them off as a joke band since there's a lot of humor and parody in their music, image, and
delivery. In the early-'80s, when the punk/hardcore scene was becoming super-serious,
political, and rigidified, WF went against the grain, dressing up in ridiculous outfits
and playing pop & classic rock covers (as they say in the great and hilarious "A
Question Of Intelligence": "When punk's become the establishment, I'd say our
kind is heaven-sent.")
They channeled an incredible array of influences into their music, which is nowhere more
apparent than on this reissue. The bands covered here alone should tell you where they're
coming from (Cheap Trick, Blue Öyster Cult, The Beatles (twice, including a
dead-on version of "I'll Be Back"), Kiss, The Saints, The Germs, Herman's
Hermits). Then there's the oddities sprinkled throughout: a "Bringing On The
Heartbreak"-style power ballad, a doo-wop song on speed, psychedelia, a capella, and
an homage to The Monkees' "Head". Normally such a fucked up mishmash wouldn't
appeal to me, but WF pull it off with a plethora of panache.
Of course the hard-driving rock, punk, and hardcore that make up the majority of this
trove is what really does it for me. Tracks like "Instant Breakfast" (aka
"Geiger Counter" from yet another side release), "12 O'Clock
High", "Butterfly Revolution", "Loaded", "Kill
Yourself", and "Zero Hour" are just all time fucking balls-out classics
that I would put up against anything out there. Superior songwriting and pop sensibilities
prevail on other rock solid tracks like "Paul Is Dead", "Face Down",
"Jungle" (check that killer guitar solo). This is absolute quality shit, man.
With all the trouble surrounding the transfer of the original recordings I was worried the
vibrant sound on the record would be lost. My worries were for naught. This reissue
captures the rich punch and sizzle that I loved so much on the original LP. There are a
few minor imperfections in the mastering, but I doubt most people will ever notice. The
booklet presents all the artwork and lyric sheets from the original releases exactly the
way a good reissue should. Simply put, this reissue lives up to even my very, very lofty
expectations. I'm so fucking psyched on this. I'm sad that I was unable to see it realized
on Acme, but I'm just glad that it's seen the light of day. Like most things that I get
excited about, people will probably just pass this by, but dammit I'm thrilled. Reissue of
the decade, as far as I'm concerned! Now if they can give the same treatment to
"Third Strike" I could die a happy man. You know that chicken's got a certain
Wessonality! |

PROPHETS OF PUNK |
| The long-out-of-print punk rock classic EP from Lowell. This
